Are You Prepared To Be A Part Of The Rapidly Expanding Healthcare Industry?
The Healthcare industry solely exists because we, and of course – health issues, exist.Healthcare is and will continue to be in demand until the time the proverbial Pandora’s box is finally closed. In fact, it is safe to say, it is a booming industry. A career in healthcare is always a good choice, it is secure, high paying (at least compared to most others) and can be extremely gratifying. There is hardly any job that provides as much satisfaction as saving lives. In this industry you can pursue other careers if don’t consider yourself cut out to be a doctor. A career as a nurse, a medical assistant, a lab assistant or a phlebotomist are some of the other options.
You can start out your career in the health care industry as a medical assistant (MA). As a medical assistant your job profile will involve assisting doctors and physicians on various medical and administrative tasks. Tasks include checking up on patients, filling up daily reports and charts, taking readings, assisting with the billing and insurance etc. Most medical assistants either work in hospitals, clinics and with practicing doctors. $10 to $15 per hour is the average wage for MAs with little or no experience, experienced ones are paid more.
To be a certified medical assistant (CMA) one has to pass the medical assistant certification exam. The certification/registration exams are mainly administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Association of Medical Technologists (AMT). Being certified is better, as it opens up many doors. Besides, hospitals and clinics are also making certification mandatory for employment. Because of legal muddles, those that qualify the AAMA exam are called “certified” and those that qualify the AMT are called “registered”. $25 is the fee for the AMT exam and $90 for the AAMA exam.
To be a certified medical assistant you have to enroll or undergo training at any of the accredited schools that offer a medical assistant program. You can also sit for the exam if you have at least 5 years of work experience as a medical assistant. As part of your training you will be taught anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, patient care etc.
Carefully do your research when selecting your school. Check up on the reputation, pass percentage and the faculty of your prospective schools. You can also try talking to some of the graduates as well. The Accrediting Bureau of Health education Schools and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs are the accrediting bodies for allied health programs and schools, check if your prospective school has the proper approvals. Remember, it’s your career – carefully select your schools and work hard to get where you want to.
