Starting Your Healthcare Career as a CNA

To fill their staffing requirements, hospitals and nursing facilities usually hire unlicensed assistant personnel like certified nursing assistants (CNA). Patients who are unable to carry out activities of daily living on their own require the help of these nursing assistants. In recent years they have also been hired as home health aides. All CNAs are required to undergo compulsory CNA classes and only then are they qualified to work as a nursing assistant.

The job description of certified nursing assistants often include monitoring of vital signs, helping in patient ambulation, preparing meals, and assisting in bathing and other patient needs. They can also be delegated with the daily checking and setting up of uncomplicated medical equipment like suction machines. Their tasks may also include non-invasive specimen collection for analysis. For CNA’s working as home health aides they can also be tasked with shopping and preparing meals prescribed by a nutritionist or dietician. The duty of a nursing assistant is that of a caregiver and he/she is expected to perform everything expected of him/her as a healthcare professional and that is necessary for the patient.

It is said that the best licensed nurses started out as certified nursing assistants. A lot of people prefer this career path because you can start work after or even during a relatively short coursework. Schools often require you to present a high school diploma or its equivalent to qualify for admissions. CNA classes usually cover 8-12 weeks of coursework. Discussions on basic concepts of anatomy and physiology, diet, and nursing skills are essential components of the curriculum for these CNA classes. Return demonstrations and internships are also performed so students can gain hands-on experience. More importantly, since being a CNA requires patient interaction, therapeutic communication and customer relations are usually an essential component of CNA classes. To be good at the job, a CNA needs to have that human touch and it comes only with the desire to serve.

It is believed that the need for nursing assistants will grow by 19% in a decade’s time. The increasing popularity of home-based care as a more cost-efficient healthcare option is the persistent undertone in the said trend. CNA’s typically earn $7 to $14 hourly. Their salaries are also contingent upon level of experience, seasoned CNA’s can get as much as $32,000 in a year.

A certified nursing assistant earn as much as $14 per hour. The short coursework of CNA classes, typically 6 to 12 weeks, makes this healthcare career path particularly enticing. More resources on this career path can be found here.
